Inspired by old disco soul with a twist of modern pop, Stardust is 20-year-old Portuguese jazz singer / songwriter Maya Blandy’s first single and is already making waves with pre-release exposure on BBC Radio 6’s Huey Morgan show and getting a great reaction in Portuguese clubs.
Jake Wherry, founding member and producer of UK Hip-hop pioneers, The Herbaliser, created the beat in London in 2022 and sent it straight over to Maya in Madeira. She wrote the lyrics – dedicated to her lifelong best friend, Maria – in just one day. Once together in Jake’s studio, they recorded the song in an evening.
Earlier this year, American house and disco legend, Kathy Brown, was recording a session in Jake’s studio and, in a break, he played her Stardust. She loved it so much, she started singing along and Jake, once he had picked his jaw off the floor, asked if he could record her. Now Kathy’s distinctive voice and powerful vocalisations add an extra layer of magic and complete the song.
Maya has since written and recorded other fresh and original songs with Jake and they’re currently putting together their first disco pop album – also called Stardust – to be released in summer 2023, in time for everyone to get their groove on.
